Iran: Albaloo Polow (Rice with Sour Cherries)

This is an amazing recipe: it is rather simple ingredient-wise, though the preparation is somewhat involved. After searching through and looking at a lot of Arabic dishes for this month's Cook Around the Globe, I was at first a bit skeptical about Persian food. Not that I hadn't heard great things about bit - after all, check the title of the cookbook I found this recipe in! But rather, at a first glance (!), Persian cuisine doesn't use the same variety of spices that other countries in the Middle East do. However, the first spoonful of this fantastic dish made the meaning of the word "legendary" completely clear to me. It still blows my mind how such few and simple ingredients can come together in such an amazing way.  This immediately became a new family favorite and will surely find its way on table again, many times.

Potato Chip Chicken (or Turkey)

It's SRC (Secret Recipe Club) time again. This month, I was assigned the blog From Grandma Loy's Kitchen, written by Loy. She has a lot of recipes and I was beginning to think that I'd have a very hard time making a decision about which one to prepare. That was until I saw the recipe for Potato Chip Chicken. I had seen similar recipes before and it was on the back of my head to try one some. The SRC was a perfect opportunity. Plus, I thought potato chips would be a good sales pitch for my ever-complaining LittleGrouch. That didn't work, though MissChubbyCheeks and I enjoyed our meal. Instead of using chicken, I substituted Dijon Mustard marinated turkey breast (store bought from ALDI). The turkey already had a lot of flavor from the marinade, so I only added some oregano and pepper to the chips for coating. (Refer to the original recipe for a more sophisticated flavor mix.) Also, as the turkey is covered in marinade, it wasn't necessary to dip the meat in egg to make the chips stick.

Cook Around the Globe - August 2012 Roundup

Welcome to the roundup of my exploration of Mexican food. As always, I have greatly enjoyed this month's cooking, I discovered several recipes that will make it on our menu again, and there are several more dishes that I didn't have the time to try (they are on my list for next time). It was very difficult for me to pick this month's favorites (that's why there are so many runner-ups). My favorite dish was Pork with Nopalitos. Runners-up were Carnitas, QuesadillasSquid Simmered with Tomatoes & Olives, and Chilaquiles con Huevos. (Most of the recipes are not online - yet. If you are interested in a particular recipe, please let me know and I will type it up.)

If you have a recipe from any of the above mentioned countries that you would like me to include here, just send me a picture, title, and url, as well as your name and the name of your blog.)
